Getting the right lighting for each room in your home can be something of an adventure if you don’t know what to look for. There are so many different types of lighting out there that you can easily find one that won’t fit a specific room as well as it could.

So, how do you know which lights to choose? How do you know what will fit best for your space and provide not only ample lighting but the right aesthetic? Here is a bit of a guide for finding the right set of lights for any room in your home. It will give you a better idea of the type of fixtures that are available and what they might look like in your home space.

What are the main benefits of using LED lights

These days, there is a trend towards a specific type of light and for very good reason. LED lights are becoming more popular for many different reasons and are typically the go-to type of light for homes across the United States.

Though they have a bit more of an upfront cost, LED light bulbs will actually save you money over the long run. They are far more efficient than most of their counterparts and will actually help to lower your electricity costs over their lifespan.

Perhaps best of all, LED light bulbs tend to be more durable as well. You can always spend less on a lesser quality of bulb, but you will need to replace them far more often. There’s an old say: pay me now, pay me later. You will end up spending the amount that you’ll spend on LED bulbs on lesser bulbs and replacing them. Take the step to pay a little bit more upfront and you will have the luxury of putting them in and forgetting about them.

Maybe the coolest thing about LED lights is that they now come in a wide array of colors. If you are bored with the traditional lighting, you can find an LED bulb in just about any color and add a little bit of spice to that room. Set the kind of mood that you want with any color that you want.

In addition to the specific colors, there are even LED bulbs that can change color. If you have something of a changing pallet and want to mix up the color of your lighting, you can do so with the right LED bulb. Imagine being able to switch from red to blue to green and so on a whim. That’s the kind of diversity that LED bulbs offer.

Another thing about LED lights is that they are more frequently being tied into the growing remote control trend. For many, the ability to control all aspects of our home has become vastly important and that means being able to control the lights as well. LED lights are generally the type of light involved in these home automation systems because of their quality and versatility. LED is the reigning king of lighting for the time being.

What are the different types of indoor lights

We have addressed the different kinds of bulbs that you might be dealing with when finding the right lighting for your home or a specific room. And just like the bulbs, there are several different types of indoor lighting fixtures that you can make use of in your home.

Knowing the type of room and which fixture would fit best would go a long way towards getting the aesthetic that you are looking for. There are a few different types of lighting fixtures, the following being the most prominent.

Pendant Lights

These are most commonly found in the modern kitchens of the 21st century. Essentially, these are smaller light fixtures that hang from long metal rods in the ceiling. You might see this style of light in kitchens with taller ceilings, providing drop lighting without feeling overwhelming aesthetically.

Best of all, they provide lighting to a very specific area, so you can deploy 3-5 of these and likely light up your entire kitchen. They are sleek and provide the modern aesthetic that is so popular in today’s home design.

When we think of luxury in a home, one of the first things that we consider is chandeliers. And why not? Chandeliers scream “luxury” thanks to the sparkling crystals that permeate the structure and draw every eye in the room to the fixture.

Chandeliers are a great lighting choice for big, open spaces. You might see a chandelier in a large foyer, setting the tone visually with a huge jolt of luxury while providing more than ample lighting even in those rooms that have very high ceilings.

These can be a bit more expensive than other lighting fixtures due to the sheer mass of them let alone the number of crystals that are involved in the design. These might not be great for smaller homes where they would take up more visual space; stick to higher ceilings and more wide-open spaces.

Ceiling Fan Incorporated

With rising energy costs, more and more homes are making better use of ceiling fans. This is because those ceiling fans can cool a room for far less than your central air will. For this reason, it makes sense that lighting is incorporated into the ceiling fans as well.

Generally speaking, the design is one of two different things: an array of bulbs in a circle or other geometric shapes or a single bulb in the center of the ceiling fan. The vast majority of ceiling fans will have separate chains for you to pull so that you can turn the light off but not the fan and vice versa.

Ceiling fans with lights can light up an entire living space with no issue and if you have particularly high ceilings, this might be a great option since ceiling fans need a little bit more room to operate properly.

Table Lamp

There are times in your design aesthetic where you need versatile lighting that can be moved in a snap. This is where your table lamps come in. Placed on end tables, generally speaking, it is important to find a lamp that fits the size of the table. You wouldn’t want a giant lamp on a small table or a small lamp on a huge table.

Generally speaking, your table lamps are a bit more cost-effective than some of the other options. But this is also because your table lamps won’t provide complete light for the entire room, just the section of the room where it is stationed. For this reason, you’ll likely need two or three to light an entire living area.

The cool thing about table lamps is that they are being tied into smart home automation thanks to smart power fixtures. You can turn off these table lamps with a quick tap of your smartphone or through a voice command to your smart home system.

How to choose the best lighting fixtures for your house?

Ultimately, this depends on the room that you plan on lighting and your overall style choice. With the aforementioned LED lights, you can choose any color that you want for each room of your home. That level of versatility didn’t exist even as recently as ten years ago and provides more options than ever before.

There is also a certain atmosphere that you want to bring into a specific room. For instance, bathrooms and kitchens generally use white light while living rooms go for soft, natural light (often yellow light) that can come from a traditional tungsten bulb.

The size of the room matters as well. Ideally, you don’t want to have too many lighting fixtures to light a room because it can look cluttered and too busy. If you have a huge living room space, you might want to stray away from table lamps because you would need several just to provide ample lighting to the room. This might be better suited for a ceiling fan with light incorporated or even a chandelier if that is more your speed.

If you struggle with remembering to turn the lights off at the end of the night, looking into smart home integration is definitely a great idea. You can control the lights with just the tap of your smartphone or by talking to your smart home device. That level of convenience is hard to match and makes it nearly impossible to leave those lights running all night.

It helps to know your design aesthetic when choosing the right light for your home. There are a variety of different choices out there, but not all lights are made for all functions. Think about the space that you are lighting and the kind of feeling that you want to project. This will help you decide on the size of the fixture as well as the color of the bulb that you choose.

Don’t make the mistake of choosing the wrong type of lighting for your home. Make sure that you have a fixture that provides ample lighting without struggling and that it ties into your overall design motif. Don’t have a fixture that stands out like a sore thumb and looks like it belongs just about anywhere else but in your home.
